What is Sustainability?

Sustainability can be defined as the development that can be realized by meeting the needs of the present generation while anticipating and respecting the needs of future generations.

Why Is Sustainability Important?

Although there are more than hundred countries in the world that are looking for the ways to meet the requirements for their development, concrete efforts should be made to ensure that today's development does not adversely affect the future generations with the increasing threat of climate change. The Sustainable Development Goals provide a framework for improving the lives of populations around the world and reducing the hazardous man-made effects of climate change. In short, sustainability aims to protect our natural environment, human and ecological health while promoting the innovation and without compromising our lifestyle. For this reason, it is of great importance.

COP27 was held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt on 7-8 November. The plans to achieve the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement and to prevent global climate disaster were presented. The conference was named ‘2Africa COP’ to remind that the climate change is most prevalent in Africa.

At the conference, strategies were shared on climate finance, methane emissions, nature, adaptation fund, damaged ecosystems, technology and emergency warning systems, loss and damage fund, fossil fuels, reduction and youth. On Climate Finance, it was discussed that 4-6 trillion dollars of investment in renewable energy until 2030 and financial flows should be compatible with global temperature targets. It has been announced that a satellite-based system has been established for the detection of UNEP methane emissions. For the first time, a COP decision emphasized that a healthy environment is a human right. The UN has announced that it will switch to transformative technologies against the climate crisis. The Net Zero Guidance Report has been published, phasing out the gradual reduction of coal and all fossil fuels. And the focus was on the recruitment of young people in the climate negotiations.
