ITU Security Department measures and sets targets for more sustainable commuting. The measures include the topics of walking, cycling or other non-motorized transport, vanpools, carpools, shuttle bus, public transportation, motorcycle, scooter, moped, and other electric vehicles.

For measurements of the vehicles in ITU;

  • Drivers of shuttle vehicles providing transportation for students or staff to the university will register their license plates with the Electronic Card Processing Center using a Request Form, and entry and exit will be handled by an automatic license plate recognition system. The authorized representative of the subcontractor company may apply to the Card Processing Center for the registration of shuttle vehicles.

  • Visitors to university staff must register their vehicles at the university entrance gates, where a license plate recognition system is in place.

  • Vehicle registration must be done separately for each vehicle requested.

  • Passengers accompanying the driver in vehicles registered in the system must present identification.

  • Those using more than one vehicle must register each vehicle separately.

  • Individuals visiting University staff must obtain a Parking Ticket at the University entrance gates and complete a Guest Vehicle Entry Registration.

  • Additionally, motorized couriers wishing to enter the campus must have a helmet, license plate, and the logo of the company they are affiliated with clearly visible. Otherwise, their entry to the campus will not be permitted.

The targets for sustainable commuting are shared in the ITU Traffic Information Brochure. Penalties for non-compliance with the rules are also included in the Brochure under the Traffic Penalty Point Table.

ITU Traffic Information Brochure

The purpose of the booklet is to provide information regarding the measures to be taken concerning traffic safety and the maintenance of traffic order in areas under the management of Istanbul Technical University in terms of life and property safety, as well as other provisions deemed necessary and indicated for regulation, and the principles and procedures for their implementation. ITU campus traffic policy states clearly that pedestrians have priority over all other vehicles including bikes. Therefore pedestrian access is prioritised on campus.

  • Within the residential area, pedestrians have right of way over cyclists and motor vehicles, and cyclists have right of way over motor vehicles. All vehicles must comply with this rule at all points within the residential area.

  • Motorcycles must be parked in the vehicle parking areas. Bicycles must be parked in the designated special areas.

  • Vehicles must come to a complete stop behind pedestrian crossings and give way to pedestrians wishing to cross first.

  • Vehicles may not be parked on sidewalks or road shoulders except in designated parking areas. Vehicles left in prohibited areas will be towed or immobilized by traffic officers. These vehicles will only be returned to their owners after the necessary penalties have been imposed. No vehicle may be parked on sidewalks or pedestrian walkways, even for a short period, for the purpose of loading or unloading.

  • Harassing pedestrians or drivers with a vehicle is among the circumstances requiring disciplinary investigation.

  • Drivers of shuttle buses providing transportation for students or staff to the university will register their license plates with the Electronic Card Processing Center using a Request Form, and entry and exit will be handled through an automatic license plate recognition system.

  • Vehicles providing personnel service must leave the premises after completing the service. Parking of service vehicles within the premises is prohibited. Service vehicles will be admitted to the premises starting half an hour before the service departure time.

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations opened for service in ITU Ayazaga Campus.

The stations will serve users with 2 180 kW DC fast charging, 1  120 kW DC fast charging and 3 22 kW AC chargers.

The stations, located in front of the Old Rectorate Building, in the Indoor Swimming Pool parking lot and in the parking lot in front of  ITU Public Housing D2 Block, are marked on the campus map. Stations are available for use by all ITU students, academics and staff.

Bicycle and electrical scooter roads

ITU provides and extends specifically assigned bicycle and electrical scooter roads throughout the campus. Campus residents can use shared scooters with IOS and Android apps. These are colored in red and motorized vehicle access is prevented with specially designed small barriers that look like bees, which is our university’s mascot. Furthermore, Istanbul Technical University turns roads for motorized vehicles on the campus into pedestrian zones to provide more sustainable commuting inside the campus. Examples are Festival road, Ağaçlı road, and Konukevi road.

  • A total of 6 km bike roads are constructed on campus.

  • For the safe ride, bumpers made out of recycled materials are implemented to divide vehicle and bike paths.

  • There is also a bike house in the campus for bike repair, sale and rental purposes.

  •

Shared Bicycle

180 bicycles were provided  to ITU Maslak Campus members. 10 of them are electric bicycles.

Pedestrian Access

ITU campus traffic policy states clearly that pedestrians have priority over all other vehicles including bikes. Therefore pedestrian access is prioritised on campus. To indicate this, crosswalks are placed at 32 different locations in Ayazağa Campus. The most pedestrian-intense spot of the campus, the main entrance is furtherly emphasized with the patterned tiles, as an extra caution for motorized vehicles.

Some regions of the campus that were previously open to motorized transport, are transformed into pedestrian-only or pedestrian+bike-only access (e.g. Lake road, secondary campus entrance, event place).

What about non-human pedestrians? While prioritizing pedestrian pass, ITU reminds its visitors they are not the only kind wandering our campus on foot!

Pedestrian roads are designed with landscapes to encourage walking and social interactions. The landscapes around the walkways provides improved air quality and lower emissions. ITU takes biodiversity into consideration in campus planning.

ITU IstanbulON Urban Mobility Laboratory

Reflecting on the current climate in increased levels of urban mobility and challenges that are associated with it, ITU Faculty of Architecture founded IstanbulON Urban Mobility Lab. IstanbulON is a living lab with the aim of bringing together companies, industries, universities and start-ups with communities in order to produce inclusive, sustainable and innovative mobility solutions.
